How should slippers fit?

Slippers are a comfortable and cozy footwear option that many people enjoy wearing around the house. However, it is important to make sure that your slippers fit properly to ensure maximum comfort and support. In this blog, we will explore some common questions on how slippers should fit, whether slipper sizes are the same as shoe sizes, whether you should size up or down in slippers, and if you are supposed to wear socks with slippers.

Slippers should fit snugly but not too tightly. They should be comfortable and allow your child’s feet to breathe. They should be able to wiggle their toes and move their feet around freely without feeling restricted. If you find their slippers are too loose, they can slip off your child’s feet and become a trip hazard, which can be dangerous. On the other hand, if slippers are too tight, they can cause discomfort and even pain.

As with any footwear, when trying on slippers, have your child walk around in them to see how they feel and fit. Can they wiggle their toes? Does the slipper fit snugly to the heel? If they feel too loose or too tight, you may need to go down or up a size. It is also important to consider the material of the slippers. Some materials, such as wool, can stretch over time, others, such as leather or suede doesn’t, so it is important to keep this in mind when choosing the right size.

Our slippers hold feet firmly in place thanks to their moccasin design. The suede upper will mould to their feet, without over stretching, ensuring their slippers will last until outgrown.

Slider or backless slippers aren’t always the best choice, particularly for children who are tearing around the house! You tend to find these styles don’t stay on their feet. If they walk out of their slippers there’s an increased chance of falling, plus with no structure children tend to try and keep these slippers on by scrunching their toes. For the same reasons, it’s a good idea to opt for slippers with a sturdier sole; this helps give added grip, structure, and support to growing feet.

Are slipper sizes the same as shoes sizes?

Slipper sizes are usually, but not always, the same as shoe sizes but can vary between manufacturers. It is important to measure their feet before buying slippers if you haven’t done so in a while. If you already know their shoe size, you can, with reasonable confidence, order slippers in the same size.

Should you size up or down in slippers?

With Start-Rite you don’t need to go up or down a size in our slippers. The size you measure is usually the size you need. If your child is between sizes, we’d recommend going up rather than down.

As with all footwear, you just need to check the slippers fit once they arrive. They should fit snugly around your child’s foot and heel with a little wiggle room at the toes. Well- fitting slippers should not restrict movement or cause discomfort.

It is also important to consider the thickness of the socks you will be wearing with the slippers. If you plan on wearing thick socks, you may want to size up to accommodate the extra thickness. Always have your child try on footwear with the socks they’ll tend to wear with them.

Are you supposed to wear socks with slippers?

There is no right or wrong. Whether you should wear socks with slippers is a personal preference. Some people prefer to wear socks with slippers for added warmth and comfort, while others prefer to wear slippers without socks to allow their feet to breathe and avoid overheated feet.

Our slippers have soft suede uppers and cosy faux fur linings making them cosy and comfy without the need for socks. Not only that, but we have fun, colourful, and cute designs from bunnies and bees to dinos and rainbows.
