How to make shoes grip better: cleaning the treads

Boy wearing Start-Rite Glitch

Whether they’re racing around the playground or heading out on a muddy walk, children rely on their shoes to keep them steady on their feet. But over time, even the best-designed soles can lose their grip – not because they’re worn out, but because they’re clogged with dirt.

Before assuming it’s time for a new pair, it’s worth taking a closer look at the tread. A simple clean can make a surprising difference to how well shoes perform, helping to restore traction and reduce the risk of slips.

What is the tread on shoes?

The tread refers to the patterned surface on the bottom of a shoe – sometimes called the sole pattern, grooves or lugs. These ridges and channels are carefully designed to provide grip by increasing friction between the shoe and the ground.

Put simply, the tread is what helps to keep your child stable on a variety of surfaces, from smooth indoor floors to wet pavements and muddy paths.

However, when those grooves become packed with mud, dust or small stones, they can’t do their job properly. Instead of creating grip, a clogged tread can leave the sole smoother and more slippery – particularly on wet surfaces.

This is why shoes that once felt secure can suddenly seem less reliable. And it’s not just about safety:

  • Built-up dirt can wear down materials over time.
  • Muddy soles are more likely to be tracked into your home.
  • The overall lifespan of the shoe may be reduced.

The good news? Regular cleaning can keep the tread working as it should – so your child stays safer, and their shoes last longer.

How to clean the tread on shoes

Cleaning the tread doesn’t need to be complicated. With a few simple steps, you can remove debris and restore grip in just a few minutes.

Remove loose, dry dirt

Start by knocking the soles together gently or tapping them against a hard surface to dislodge any loose, dry debris.

You can also use your hands (or a cloth) to brush away surface dirt. This first step helps to clear away the easiest particles so you can focus on what’s trapped deeper in the grooves.

Top tip: It’s best to do this outside to avoid bringing dirt indoors.

Brush out dirt from the grooves

Next, take a closer look at the tread pattern. You’ll often find small stones, compacted mud or grit wedged into the grooves.

Using a soft-bristled brush (an old toothbrush works perfectly), carefully scrub along the grooves to loosen and remove trapped dirt. For stubborn areas, a blunt tool can help to tease debris out – but be gentle to avoid damaging the sole.

This step is key to restoring the tread’s function, as it clears the pathways that help to create grip.

Wipe the soles clean with soapy water

Once the larger debris is gone, it’s time for a deeper clean.

Mix a small amount of mild soap with warm water and use a cloth or brush to wipe down the soles. This helps to remove any remaining dirt, fine particles or residue that could still affect traction.

Avoid soaking the entire shoe unless it’s designed for it – focus on the soles to keep the cleaning process targeted and effective.

Allow the shoes time to dry

After cleaning, let the shoes dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid placing them on radiators or using direct heat, as this can damage materials and affect the shoe’s structure.

Make sure the soles are fully dry before your child wears them again. Once dry, the tread should look noticeably cleaner – and feel better able to grip the ground.

Keeping treads clean is especially important during wetter months, when mud and moisture can build up quickly. If you’re choosing footwear for colder conditions, it’s also worth exploring options designed with enhanced grip.

For everyday wear, well-designed shoes with durable soles – like those in our school shoes collection – paired with regular maintenance can help to keep little feet steady.

Taking a few minutes to clean your child’s shoe treads as part of a shoe care routine can make a real difference – not just to grip, but to comfort, longevity and cleanliness too. It’s a simple habit that helps to ensure every step they take is a confident one.
